Why cant the computer on here ever say anything nice ?

@18

A bad move is a bad move, if this bad move does not result to losing position then it was still a bad move and in that case just add positional annotation symbol, white is better, or black is better, etc.

Did you use some kind of idea from Matej and Ivan on complexity calculation?
My chess program (Lucas Chess) shows exclamation marks, but about half of all moves have such exclamation marks. For example, here's the beginning of a game:

White: engine
Black: me
1. e4! c5
2. b3 Nc6
3. Nf3! d6!
4. Bd3 Nf6!
5. O-O g6!
6. Bc4 Bg7!
7. Bb2! O-O!
8. Re1! e6
9. Bb5 Bd7!
10. Nc3! a6
11. Bf1 b5
12. e5? dxe5!
13. g5? Nd5
14. Nce4! h6
15. c4 hxg5
16. cxd5! exd5!
17. Nxc5! d4
...

Here's what a brilliancy (!!) looks like in my chess program, from the same game:

35. Rxe8! Re6??
36. Qd4+!! Rf6!
...

Very good software.

After 35... Re6, this is not a contest anymore, white's advantage is too much. So I dont like a program appending !! on any move.

BTW what is the reason why there are so many !, what are the conditions?

I've read in various places comments like "Fritz gave this a double exclamation mark", so obviously some engines are able to annotate more helpfully than others.

"Without error there can be no brilliancy"
(Emanuel Lasker)

“Of course, errors are not good for a chess game, but errors are unavoidable and in any case, a game without errors, or as they say 'flawless game' is colorless.”
(Mikhail Tal)
chessbase/fritz I think has something.
but i havent used in years. if i recall the ! and !! were used not often and in correct positions.
@ #1: If i take look at my games, there might not much nothing nice to say. But perhaps this applies only to me .

I just read an obituary notice about Viktor Korchnoi which passed away some days ago. The author played once against Korchnoi (a great honour for him, as he notes) and asked for analysis after a quick defeat:

"Next time you play against an GM prepare your self better!"

The authors of chess engines etc. are as intolerant or apodictic (as you like) as the or some masters, i guess ;-)

But wait, my chess software has an option: If i blunder it tells me "I'm not sure if your last move was so good." Very kind. Thank you. But it doesn't matter.

Please see http://www.faz.net/aktuell/sport/mehr-sport/schachspieler-und-grossmeister-viktor-kortschnoi-ist-gestorben-14274127.html for the nice article (unfortunately only in German)

Best regards, Karl
