Our Favourite Open Source Chess Websites

Please don't say "like FICS, Free Chess Club is fully free". FICS is free as in beer but the software itself has not been open source for many years now.

Not content with sticking it to the man with your own site. You've gotta twist it as you kick'em in the balls. You Lichess guys are really just a bunch of old school, counter-culture, hippies.

Well, all I've got to say to that is: keep on truckin'. (and fightin' the good fight)
I'd suggest that just like this, there should be a page with projects that other people can contribute to, relating to chess. That would be a very nice idea.

This looks awesome! May i ask some questions?

http://play.lczero.org/
* when i play there does this make Leela learn?

http://lczero.org/
* Does this diagram show the playing strength? How does this relate to ELO?
* When will approximately be the point when it will beat top engines?
* is it planned to let it compete at the computer chess world championships? (I hope so)

Software
* Screenshots? Has it a board?
* Can i play against the software? will this make Leela learn?
* Do i need to be connected to the internet when the software runs? Or does it accumulate the data locally and uploads it once i am connected?
* Are these big amounts of data or just a few megabytes per month? (i have Prepaid internet)
* Will this also work on Laptops which dont have GPUs (Graphic Cards)?
* When the software plays against itself in order to learn, will this execute moves on a visible board, so that it can be observed?

Thanks for the work, i wish you good luck.
I just played a game against Leela online and it didnt see a mate in 2, why is this?

I managed to draw against Leela with opposite color bishops :D
It thought till the end it could win with at least 56% chance.

No, only self-played games are used for training (as for AlphaZero)

> * Does this diagram show the playing strength? How does this relate to ELO?

The diagram on the main page shows an ELO based on self-played games only, where the 0 is set to random play. There is no simple way to translate that ELO into a "normal" ELO. There are efforts elsewhere to keep track on Leela's progress by letting it play against handicapped version of stockfish. See notably this google spreadsheet:

> * When will approximately be the point when it will beat top engines?

Depends on the amount of processing power that can be contributed. At current rate, it would take several years. But if the project can multiply its number of contributors by a few dozens, it would take a few months or weeks.
